Peritonsiler abscess, also called Quinsy

DEFINITION
Peritonsiler abscess, also called Quinsy, is the accumulation of pus in the back of the mouth, around the tonsils (tonsillectomy).

CAUSE
Peritonsiler abscess most often caused by streptococcal bacteria, but sometimes can also be caused by other bacteria. Peritonsil abscess usually occurs as a complication of tonsillitis. But today, peritonsiler abscesses are rare because of the use of antibiotics to treat tonsillitis.
There are several factors that increase the likelihood of abscess formation peritonsil:
·         tooth and gum infections
·         Chronic tonsillitis
·         infectious mononucleosis
·         smoke
·         chronic lymphocytic leukemia
·         calcium deposits or stone in the tonsil


SYMPTOMS
Usually the first sign of a sore throat abscess peritonsil is. Some of the symptoms that can occur are:
·         tonsils (tonsillectomy) were swollen and red
·         cervical lymph nodes on the affected side swollen and painful
·         severe throat pain
·         pain and difficulty in swallowing or opening the mouth
·         fever and chills
·         headache
·         pain in the ear
·         saliva flows out or unable to swallow saliva
·         sounds like mumbling (hot potato voice) or hoarse
·         bad breath is not bad
Peritonsil abscess untreated for a long time can cause serious complications, such as infection spread to the lower jaw, neck, or chest, sometimes even up into the lungs and cause pneumonia.
Swollen tissue can cause blockage of the airway. This condition is life-threatening and is a medical kedaruratian.

DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis is based on symptoms and physical examination. In addition, it could also be investigated, such as abscesses by needle aspiration to ensure the infection, or imaging studies (eg, CT scan or MRI) to see more clearly abscess.

TREATMENT
Treatment is usually performed to remove the pus abscess peritonsil is in it. Pus can be removed by using a syringe (aspiration) or making a small incision in the abscess.
If this does not work, it may be necessary removal of the tonsils (tonsillitis) surgically, which is called a tonsillectomy. This action should be carried out on people who often have tonsillitis or abscess peritonsil never experienced before.
If patients find it difficult to drink or eat, it is necessary to infusion to maintain hydration of the body. Drugs to treat pain and antibiotics are also given.

PREVENTION
There are several ways you can do to reduce the risk of abscess formation peritonsil, among others by maintaining oral hygiene, and not smoking.
In case of tonsillitis, especially bacterial tonsillitis, infection needs to be treated to the bitter end to prevent abscess.
