Parapharyngeal Abscess

DEFINITION
Parapharyngeal abscess is an accumulation of pus in the neck inside.

CAUSE
Infection of the area parafaring usually occurs after pharyngitis or tonsillitis, although it can also be caused by local spread from a tooth infection and lymph nodes.


SYMPTOMS
Parapharyngeal abscess can cause airway irritation. Most patients experience fever, sore throat, pain when swallowing, and swelling in the neck.
In addition, the mouth can also be difficult to be opened (trismus). In certain cases, could be bacteria spread through the blood vessels, high fever, neurological disorders, severe bleeding due to rupture of the carotid artery or septic trombophlebitis the internal jugular vein (Lemierre's syndrome).

DIAGNOSIS
Parafaring abscess allegations made in people who have an infection or have a neck in the typical symptoms. Diagnosis is confirmed using a CT (Computed Tomography) scan with contrast.

TREATMENT
At abscess parafaring, the airway should be maintained. Broad-spectrum antibiotics can be given by injection. Generally required surgery to remove the pus that exist. After surgery, performed pus culture to determine what is necessary antibotik later.
