DEFINITION
Sometimes an abscess formed in the muscle. Pyomyositis is a
disease in which muscles are infected by pus-producing bacteria that often
causes the formation of an abscess. Pyomyositis more commonly found in the
tropics and in people with impaired immune systems are exposed to infection by
bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. The most commonly affected are the
thigh muscles, buttocks and upper arms and the muscles around the shoulder.
CAUSE
Abscesses can occur as a result of the spread of bacteria
from a bone infection or other nearby tissues or spread through the bloodstream
as a result of infections in distant parts of the body. Pyomyositis often
caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Predisposing factors for the
occurrence of pyomyositis among other immune system disorders, trauma, viral
infections, and malnutrition. Most cases are caused by declining individual
health factors and the presence of other infections that occur simultaneously.
Can also be found in patients with diabetes, HIV and malignancy.
SYMPTOMS
Pyomyositis can cause the occurrence of fever, inflammation
of the affected area, and muscle aches. Affected muscles can cramp with the
swelling and discomfort, especially when the muscle is moved.
DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis is based on symptoms exist and examination
results. Blood tests may be done to look for signs of infection. In addition,
imaging studies such as MRI, can be used to ensure the presence of an abscess.
TREATMENT
The goal of treatment is to find and address the main causes
of pyomyositis. In addition, it could also be taken to remove the pus that
exist.
