DEFINITION
Bacterial tracheitis (pseudomembranous croup) is an
infection of the main airways (trachea) caused by bacteria.
CAUSE
Bacterial tracheitis are rare and can be about children at
different ages. The bacteria staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus is the
most frequent cause of bacterial tracheitis.
SYMPTOMS
Infection occurs suddenly and is characterized by the
absence of sound breathing faster when children inhale (stridor), high fever,
and often a lot of phlegm with pus. In rare cases, bacterial tracheitis may
occur as a result of complications of croup.
DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis is based on symptoms and physical examination
there. By laryngotrakeobronkoskopi can be seen directly the purulent tracheal
secretions. Secretions may be taken and examined to determine the causative
organism. X-ray radiographs of the neck can be done to differentiate bacterial
tracheitis with croup.
TREATMENT
Antibiotics can be given to treat an existing infection.
With therapy, most children recover completely. Children who are severely ill
may need a breathing apparatus that is inserted through the mouth or nose into
the trachea (endotracheal intubation) to keep the airway open.
