Abscesses in the head and neck

DEFINITION
Abscesses can form in the head and neck, especially in the back of the throat, in the mouth and on the cheeks salivary glands (parotid). In addition, sometimes abscesses can also be found in the brain.

CAUSE
Abscess in the throat is usually caused by an infection (including infections of the tonsils or adenoids). Throat abscess is more common in children.
Abscesses can also form in the lymph nodes located on the side of the throat. This abscess is usually derived from an infection in the vicinity (eg dental abscess or infection of the salivary glands).
Abscesses can also occur at the outlet of one of the parotid gland. This abscess caused by spread of infection from the mouth and is often found in the elderly or people with chronic diseases who experience dryness in the mouth due to low fluid intake or due to certain drugs (such as antihistamines).


SYMPTOMS
Fever and pain at the site of the abscess. For an abscess in the neck inside, the patient may experience difficulty in opening the mouth. The spread of infection in the neck can cause swelling of the neck. If the abscess causing damage to the carotid artery in the neck, there can be blood clots or bleeding.

DIAGNOSIS
Abscesses in the skin or under the skin very easily recognizable, while the deep abscess is often difficult to find. To determine the size and location of the abscess, can be investigated, for example, a CT scan.

TREATMENT

Abscesses in the head and neck usually require antibiotics. In addition, surgical treatment to remove the pus (pus) is also often done.
