DEFINITION
Children who have anxiety toward strangers may be crying
when he did not know approached him. Anxiety is a normal happen if started at
the age of about 8 or 9 months and improves when a child is 2 years old.
CAUSE
Babies learn to recognize their parents within the first few
months after birth. Until the age of about 6 months, babies usually also show
interest in other people, other than their parents. However, after 6 months of
age, many children are starting to feel scared and do not enjoy being around
people other than their parents.
Anxiety toward strangers is a normal part of a child's
cognitive development. Anxiety to part with those close to him (parents or
caregivers) also occur at the same time. Both of these reactions arise because
babies begin to distinguish between people who he knew the people he did not
know, and he prefers the people he had known. However, how good and how long
the anxiety that occurs very different between each child.
SYMPTOMS
Children can quickly provide a strong reaction against
foreigners, especially when he was approached suddenly or carried by a person
he did not know. The child may feel confused was among people he did not know,
especially with people who looked different to him, for example, people with glasses
or a man who has a beard.
However, the level of anxiety shown by children towards
foreigners is different, which is believed to relate to the child's
temperament. Research shows that there is a genetic role in the occurrence of
anxiety toward strangers.
DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis is based on symptoms exist.
TREATMENT
Parents should know the condition of his son. Thus, if the
child will meet with the foreign thinks, for example, with the grandfather or
grandmother, parents can prepare it first. Grandparents need to be told about
the reaction may be shown by children, so that they do not mensalahartikan the
child's behavior towards them. Soothe the child and do not overreact to a
child's behavior is usually the only way to do.
If there is a new baby sitter, then better baby sitter first
visited a few times and met with the family, including children who will
fosterage, before the day he started working. When the baby sitter started
caring for children, parents should not immediately abandon the child away, but
give me a few days until the child feels familiar with the new guardians.
Likewise, if the grandfather or grandmother would come to care for children for
several days while the parents go, they have to come a few days earlier when
the parents are still there.
If anxiety toward strangers is severe and lasts for a long
time, then this situation may be a sign of anxiety wider. In this case, a child
needs to be taken to a doctor who is an expert in the field so that the child
can be examined and treated properly.
